Do I have to be a member to take out Caravan Cover or insurance?

Anyone can get a quote online or by phone, but you will need to become a member of the Club to purchase cover.

Do you offer a UK breakdown and recovery service?

Yes, it’s called Mayday and you can find more information on our UK  breakdown and recovery page.

I want to travel outside the EU, is my cover still valid?

Yes, our Caravan Cover is valid overseas for up to 182 days per year, our Car Insurance is valid in the EU and associated countries for up to 270 days, and our Motorhome/Campervan Insurance valid in the EU and associated countries for 365 days a year.

However, it is important to check your policy wording to make sure that the cover you take out on any of your vehicles is adequate for your purposes.  We would also recommend you also check what documentation you may need when driving abroad, including the International Certificate of Motor Insurance, also known as a 'Green Card'.

You can find full details here.

What happens if I'm involved in an accident abroad?

If you are involved in an accident or breakdown which requires you to leave your caravan/car/motorhome you should:

  • Remove any valuables and items that might attract Customs Duty, including wine and spirits

  • Take your baggage and personal effects with you

  • Make sure anything left in the vehicle will still be covered by your cover provider

  • Make sure your cover provider will continue to provide cover while your vehicle remains on the continent and for the journey back to your home address

What insurance and financial services does the Caravan and Motorhome Club offer?

As well as Caravan Cover, the Club offers a range of insurance products including Motorhome and Campervan Insurance, Car Insurance, Home Insurance and Overseas Holiday Insurance (including travel and European breakdown cover), as well as MAYDAY UK Breakdown Cover.

What is Red Pennant?

Red Pennant is the Club's overseas holiday insurance service and is designed to consider the needs of the caravanner, motorhomer and trailer tent owner in trouble abroad. As well as single or multi-trip travel insurance, cover can also include European breakdown assistance, vehicle and passenger repatriation, continuation of holiday travel.

MAYDAY UK Breakdown and Recovery

Does the MAYDAY UK breakdown product cover caravans and motorhomes?

Yes, our MAYDAY UK breakdown cover includes caravans, motorhomes and campervans of any age, weight, or size, providing you are operating within UK legal towing guidelines and using a standard 50mm tow-ball when towing a caravan.

Are there any length, width, or weight restrictions?

Our MAYDAY UK breakdown and roadside recovery have no size, weight or vehicle age restrictions, providing you are operating within UK legal towing guidelines and using a standard 50mm tow-ball when towing a caravan. There are also no extra charges for specialist equipment if your outfit gets stuck on soft ground or other ‘off-road’ areas. Plus, our ‘Dual recovery’ feature means that if your vehicle breaks down on the way to (or during) a holiday and can’t be fixed, we'll take you on to your destination and, if your vehicle can’t be fixed during the holiday, we’ll take it (and you) back home again once your holiday is complete.

Are there different levels of cover?

Yes, MAYDAY offers three different levels of cover, starting with our ‘Roadside & Recovery’ level, which includes roadside assistance to try and get you going again; recovery to a single UK destination if your vehicle can’t be repaired; a second drop-off within 75 miles of your home if your caravan or trailer needs to be recovered to a different destination; misfuelling cover; and our Dual Recovery feature, which means that if your vehicle breaks down on the way to (or during) a holiday and can’t be fixed, we'll take you on to your destination and, if your vehicle can’t be fixed during the holiday, we’ll take it (and you) back home again once your holiday is complete.

If you want extra peace of mind, we offer our ‘Premium UK’ cover level, which includes all the features of Roadside & Recovery, but adds on Home Call, fixing mechanical problems at your home or recovering your car or motorhome/campervan to your nearest repairer; and also includes Extra Care, which offers a choice of one of either accommodation, car hire or alternative travel expenses (up to £100 per person, to a maximum of £500), as well as deferred recovery and even a chauffeur if the main driver is incapacitated. And finally, our top-tier cover level, ‘Premium UK Plus’, which offers all the benefits of Premium UK but also includes Enhanced Extra Care, offering a combination of accommodation, car hire and/or alternative travel expenses (up to £150 per person, to a maximum of £900) as well as our unique Pre-Departure Caravan Cover element, which gets your immobilised caravan or trailer moving, even when it’s at home.

Am I covered if a towed caravan breaks down?

Yes, if you take out cover for your caravan, this includes both your tow-car and your caravan when they are being used together, and your car alone when the caravan is not being used. This means all the elements of your chosen cover level will apply to your car/caravan combination, or just your car if you are driving it on its own.

Is breakdown cover worth having?

Technical difficulties happen all of the time with all vehicles, regardless of their age, model and potentially whatever they’re towing. No matter how well you maintain your vehicles, there’s always the other guy, the weather and any number of other elements outside your control. MAYDAY UK Breakdown and Recovery offers you the peace of mind that wherever you’re going, we will be by your side if you do run into any difficulties, with unlimited call outs, 24/7, 365 days a year, as long as it’s not for the same problem!

What kind of cover do I need for making a single trip?

All cover levels of MAYDAY UK Breakdown are annual policies that cover every trip you make throughout the year, which is why we say you are covered 24/7/365.

I make 2 or more trips a year – what kind of cover can I get?

There are no limits on how many trips you make in a single year, nor on the length of those trips, as long as you are in the UK.

Does using breakdown cover affect insurance?

No, your breakdown cover and your vehicle insurance are completely separate, even if they are being provided by the same company. However, following an accident, you may need to use your breakdown cover before making a repair claim under your vehicle cover.

What is the average cost of breakdown cover?

Breakdown cover pricing can vary significantly across providers based on a wide range of factors, not least how each provider structures its pricing. Many of the main providers adopt ‘risk-rated’ pricing, which means the price will increase depending on your vehicle and other circumstances. Your premium may also increase at renewal, depending on whether, and how many times you use the service. MAYDAY is a fixed-price policy – the price you see quoted on our website is the price you’ll pay. And it will not change at renewal, regardless of how many times you use the service, unless the overall ‘list price’ changes.

Tell me more about the Home call

If you have our Roadside & Recovery cover level, and you break down at home, where the vehicle is usually stored, or within a quarter of a mile of that location, you will not be covered.

Not having cover for breakdowns occurring where the vehicle is kept is one of the main reasons assistance has to be declined under the MAYDAY UK Breakdown policy, and breaking down ‘at home’ is a very common occurrence! Our Premium UK and Premium UK Plus cover levels both include Home call cover. We’ll come to you at home, where the vehicle is normally stored (if different) or if you’ve broken down within a quarter of a mile of that location and, if it’s not possible to get you going again, we’ll take you and your vehicle (and even your passengers if required) to the nearest garage or any other single destination within 25 miles of where the breakdown happened.

Can I get European breakdown cover for my motorhome or caravan?

MAYDAY Breakdown is only available in the UK. If you’re looking for breakdown cover for European travel please get a quote for our Red Pennant product which can provide breakdown cover and/or travel insurance.

How can I make a claim?

If you suffer a breakdown or are involved in an accident and need recovering, please use the Green Flag App to register a claim, or call 0800 051 5318.
