What if FCDO advice changes when I'm on holiday in Europe?

If UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reintroduce a ban on non-essential travel to destinations included in our European programme, it may or may not recommend that all UK citizens return home as soon as possible from that destination. If FCDO do recommend that citizens return home then the Club will help members to amend their travel arrangements to make this happen.

What if FCDO advice changes after I book my holiday but before I leave home?

If the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) reintroduce a ban on non-essential travel to destinations included in our European programme then the Club will contact members who are due to travel imminently to discuss the options.

What if someone in my party shows symptoms of COVID-19 on holiday?

Your holiday party should self isolate, avoid contact with others and inform the campsite staff who can advise about local health service protocols and 'test and trace' systems. We recommend everyone travels with suitable Travel Insurance that provides cover for medical assistance and repatriation due to COVID-19, such as the Club's Red Pennant Insurance.

What if my campsite/resort gets locked down whilst I'm on holiday?

You should follow local guidance and contact the Club who may be able to assist. You should return home when it's safe to do so.

What if I have a travel booking and I no longer want to go even if FCDO allows travel?

Contact the Club to discuss your options of amending to future travel dates. However, be aware that amendment fees will apply plus possibly cancellation charges, particularly if your travel date is imminent.

Is our European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) still accepted in Europe?

UK EHIC's remain valid until their expiry date within the EU and Switzerland but not in Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland. Once an EHIC expires you can replace it with a UK Global Health Insurance Card which provides the same access to state-provided healthcare during your holiday in an EU country and Switzerland but not Liechtenstein, Norway or Iceland. This is not an alternative to Travel Insurance but can provide basic medical care and some insurance companies waive excess charges if you use your EHIC/GHIC. For more information see: Apply for a free GHIC

Are European COVID-19 restrictions different to the UK?

As in the UK, different regions have implemented slightly different policies at different times although in general all have the same aim of social distancing, face masks and good personal hygiene to avoid the spread of the virus. The campsites will have signage advising the recommended social distance and where face masks are mandatory in their area. Also, some countries require businesses such as campsites, restaurants, tourist atttractions etc to check the vaccination status or recent Covid-19 test result of all customers before allowing entry.

Do I need to wear a face covering when on holiday?

Face coverings may be required on ferries. In Europe they are often mandatory in enclosed public spaces and recommended in other situations if it is not possible to comply with local social distancing guidelines. Exemptions are allowed for children and those with certain medical conditions. For child age limits and full details for your destination(s) please check the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office website or Reopen Europa website.

What have the European campsites done to make it safer for visitors?

Our European campsites are operating within local government guidelines to keep guests and staff safe. Swimming pools, toilet blocks and other facilities are open but may limit the number of guests permitted to ensure social distancing; face masks may need to be worn in certain areas plus there will be enhanced cleaning regimes. Each campsite will have clear signage available so that you can familiarise yourself with the measures which are in operation.

What has Eurotunnel done to make it safer for me to travel?

When on the shuttles Eurotunnel require all passengers to remain in their vehicles for the duration of the journey and have closed the toilet facilities on the shuttles. Note: facilities are available at the passenger terminals.

What have the ferry companies done to make it safer for me to travel?

The ferry companies have continued to operate sailings throughout the pandemic which has given them the opportunity to implement safety measures to ensure people can travel safely. These may include mandatory face coverings for all passengers, enhanced cleaning regimes and having a plentiful supply of hand sanitiser available. Most operators have also switched to using 'fresh air' throughout the ships, not recirculated air.
