Stopovers for Australia and New Zealand

Singapore

Singapore has something for everyone, from the busy city to sandy beaches and even Chinese and Japanese gardens. With stunning skyscrapers made of glass, impressive shopping malls and unique gardens, Singapore has a lot to offer. With all English signs, you’ll have no issues navigating this beautiful city, plus their fast underground system will get you to exactly where you’d like to be. If you’d like to visit the “old Singapore”, you can do so in the historic Colonial District, famous for its markets and dining experiences.

Hong Kong

The rich and impressive city of Hong Kong is a great place to stopover. It has been voted one of the most exciting and easy to navigate cities in the world, with a mix of traditional and modern cultural experiences. You can visit the world-famous Hong Kong Harbour, Victoria Peak, Temple Street Night Market and so many other interesting places. There is even a zoo and botanical gardens, both are the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Dubai

Popular as a stopover point, Dubai offers a city break like no other. Sitting between the Arabian desert and warm Gulf waters, Dubai is the place to go if you like the warm climate, bustling city vibes and amazing shopping facilities. Visit the world’s tallest structure; Burj Khalifa, the Palm Jumeirah and the World Islands (man-made islands) or 1 of the 70 shopping malls. If you’re looking to explore the older Dubai, you can visit the many mosques, souks and alleys in the Bastakia Quarter.

Sydney

As one of the largest cities in Australia, there is so much for you to do on a stopover. From a visit to the world-famous Opera House to a boat trip along the harbour. You could take a trip to the Taronga Zoo, which is so large it’s divided into different regions! Or for something a little more peaceful, why not visit the Royal Botanic Garden, an Oasis of gardens with huge glasshouses.

Fiji

Fiji has so much to offer as a stopover destination, from the exciting city to the historic villages, you will find something you love. There are also small islands dotted around the coast, that, with a short boat trip, you’ll be surrounded by manicured beaches and clear waters. You could also go on a day trip to the Sigatoka Sand Dune, located in one of Fiji’s national parks.

Bali

This tropical paradise has some unique and breathtaking places to visit and it’s doable in just a few days. The usual place of arrival is the capital city and main hub of the Indonesian province of Bali; Denpasar. From there you can travel to various beaches, tourist hotspots and you’ll be thrown deep into Indonesian culture, giving you the opportunity to try local delicacies and cultural traditions.

Stopovers for the USA and Canada

With plenty of places to choose from, you can break up for your trip and visit one of these incredible places on route to the USA or Canada. Your choices include Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Las Vegas, Montreal, Denver, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington.

Toronto

Being the largest city in Canada, Toronto has so much to offer and is well worth a visit. You could take a day trip to the breathtaking Niagara Falls and maybe even a boat ride along the Lower Niagara River. There is a 9-mile stretch of cliffs on the east side of Toronto called Scarborough Bluffs which offers fantastic siteseeing opportunities. Or if you enjoy the city life and want to discover real urban treats, you could visit the Harbourfront Centre, with spectacular views of the city skyline. You could even take a trip up the CN Tower which stands out the most at over 550 metres high.

Top tip - “They say that all roads in Toronto lead to St. Lawrence Market, a city landmark which is more than two centuries old. Here more than two hundred vendors sell everything from local mustard to fresh pasta, lobster to artisan bread. Montreal

If you’re a foodie, Montreal could be the best stopover option for you, as the city is famously known for its bagels (different to the way they’re made in New York) and smoked meat sandwiches. You could take a shopping trip to Rue de Sainte-Catherine, known for the large department stores and small boutiques. If you wanted to find out more about the history of the city, you could visit the city of Old Montreal with buildings dating back to the 17th Century.

New York

New York City, or the “Big Apple” is the city break of all city breaks. This incredible city, packed with culture, experiences and places to visit should be on the top of your list for a stopover. New York has some of the most iconic museums, shopping facilities and architecturally stunning skyscrapers, you’ll be immersed into everything that this city has to offer. You could visit Central Park and make use of their horse-drawn carriages, or take the ferry to Liberty Island to visit the Statue of Liberty. This impressive city has a lot to offer and will be an experience you will never forget.

Top tip - “When in the Big Apple a visit to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island is a must. Explore the grounds of Liberty Island and go inside the Statue of Liberty Museum before hopping on the ferry to Ellis Island to learn about the millions of people who arrived here between 1892 and 1954 in hope of living the American dream.” - Georgia, Worldwide Travel Expert

San Francisco

With so many incredible landmarks to visit, why not stopover in San Francisco? Walk or cycle across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, take a ride through the city on a tram or take a historical trip to Alcatraz Prison. You could also take a guided bike tour along the waterfront or to Sausalito. If you're not up to cycling back, there's a ferry which offers a scenic route back to the city.' There are also amazing shopping facilities in Union Square with world-famous chefs who are ready to prepare you incredible food.

Las Vegas

Famously known as the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, you can discover everything from incredible live shows and casinos to the stunning Grand Canyon. If you’re feeling brave you could even take a helicopter tour along the Colorado River. Or, try a hot air balloon ride at sunset too and witness the stunning changing colours over the skyline.

Seattle

Seattle has so much to offer and there is so much to see and do, even for just a few days! From a trip up the Seattle Sky View Observatory giving you breathtaking views over the city to the popular hop-on-hop-bus tour taking you around the must-see spots. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could take part in the Mount St. Helens Volcano Tour.

Stopovers for Southern Africa

Although travelling to Southern Africa is a relatively quick route, why not squeeze in a stopover and visit another incredibly fascinating place on your way? You could choose to stop off in Cape Town, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Johannesburg.

Mauritius

The endlessly beautiful island of Mauritius is a great place to stop off in between your travels. With miles of sandy white beaches, crystal clear seas and hot climates, this could be the tropical trip you need. Why not take a day trip to the Black River Gorges National Park, a 6,574-hectare natural reserve, full of stunning hiking trails and home to a variety of wildlife and forestation.

Top tip - “The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden (also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden) are well worth a visit, these lovely botanical gardens are a peaceful and relaxing place where you can discover many species of tropical trees and plants. Cape Town

Cape Town has so many amazing things to see and do whilst you’re there on a stopover. From the stunning V&A Waterfront to the popular and energetic restaurants, cafes, bars and shops. You could do a mini-trip to Camps Bay; a relaxing seaside town, famously known for the friendly atmosphere, clear waters and unparalleled sunset views.

Top tip - “Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison is now a World Heritage Site and museum. Take one of the daily tours from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront and be guided by a former political prisoner who will give you a unique and incomparable insight into the island’s history.” - Chris, Worldwide Travel Expert

Johannesburg

Known as the “City of Gold”, there are lots of things to see and do whilst visiting Johannesburg. If you’re interested in history, you could visit Constitution Hill, a living museum showing the history and stories of South Africa’s political journey. You could also take a tour of the old military fort and prison, which formerly housed Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. Head over to Maboneng, a beautiful neighbourhood full of art and music, giving you a real feel for the culture of Johannesburg.

Top tip - “Soweto (short for Southwest Townships) is synonymous with the resistance to apartheid, South Africa’s former policy of racial segregation. The township’s complex past is visible in Soweto’s moving museums, historical monuments, and strong traditions. A half-day or full-day tour of Soweto lets you explore with a guide who was born and raised there, and you'll hear their personal insights into the culture of the township and learn about Soweto's vibrant and modern personality. - Chris, Worldwide Travel Expert

Mozambique

With wildlife reserves, colourful markets, stunning beaches and secluded islands, Mozambique is an incredible place to visit. You could explore the hustle and bustle of city life too in one of the 4 island cities, from Inhaca on the east coast to Maputo on the far south side. There is an assortment of religious sites, art galleries, museums and architectural masterpieces for you to explore whilst you’re there as well.

Top tip - “Vilanculos is the gateway to the magnificent Bazaruto Archipelago, a chain of islands in a marine national park. The islands offer a choice of beautiful hotels with long and deserted sandy beaches where you can relax and watch the dhows sail by. Alternatively, you may prefer the Machangulo Beach Lodge, situated on Machangulo Peninsula in Maputo Bay where the pristine sands, dune forest and secluded bay provide the perfect backdrop for your beach stay.” - Chris, Worldwide Travel Expert

Zambia

Livingstone, Zambia

From safari trips to breathtaking waterfalls, Livingstone in Zambia could be the perfect relaxing stopover destination en route to Southern Africa. There are amazing food stops dotted all over, offering you the chance to discover the local cuisine and delicacies.

Top tip - “Should you decide to stay at either the Victoria Falls Resort or The Royal Livingstone Hotel, you’ll be just a short 5–10-minute walk to the Falls and have free access. The Royal Livingstone Hotel also serves one of the best afternoon teas in the area.” - Chris, Worldwide Travel Expert

Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Although you can see Victoria Falls from Zambia, it’s said that the best view is from Zimbabwe. At a staggering 885 metres tall, a visit to this waterfall will be a memory that lasts a lifetime. There are incredible places to eat and drink too, giving you an amazing opportunity to try the local cuisine.

Top tip - “The Flight of the Angels is a helicopter flight over the mighty Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River, see why the falls are known locally as the ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. For something a little more relaxing, take a Sunset River Cruise along the Zambezi River and enjoy a sundowner drink and a romantic dinner on the water as you watch the animals wading in the water at sunset.” - Chris, Worldwide Travel Expert
