Why stay here ...

One of our caravan sites in North Yorkshire, Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite is managed by the Club on behalf of the Racecourse. Whilst staying here you'll be pitched within sight of the main stand, with the famous turf stretching out before you. A 5-minute walk from the caravan park will take you to the lovely cobbled market town of Thirsk, with its quaint shops, pubs, cafes, secluded side streets and rich local atmosphere and the award winning James Herriot Museum. There are two supermarkets located adjacent to the site and the train station is only a mile away so you can easily visit the cities of York and Newcastle.

Conveniently situated midway between the A1 and the A19, Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite makes for a natural overnight stop - but there's so much more to explore as well. Just a short drive away are many other traditional Yorkshire market towns such as Helmsley, Masham and Bedale. You will also be in pretty Herriot country, between the lovely rounded Yorkshire Dales and the more dramatic North York Moors - you'll want to make the time to enjoy the splendid views and walks that these two majestic destinations have to offer. There are various National Trust and English Heritage sites within the surrounding area, including spectacular abbeys such as Fountains, Rievaulx, Jervaux and Bylands. A good site but dated services

Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite
We stayed at Thirsk at the end of a Dales tour, wanting a bit of urban wind down with shopping, strolling and a good choice of meals out. Thirsk seemed a good base for local travelling. We’ve stayed on racecourse sit a before and generally know what to expect. I had checked the race’s schedule before booking just to make sure we’d be clear. The site is at one end of the racecourse, a grass triangle on the eastern side on the edge of Thirsk. Directly behind is a Lidl and across the road is a Tesco. All pitches are grass with markers laid out in three rows outward from the site building. This is the office, washrooms, laundry and washup all in one 60s-70s type pavilion. The site managers were great and really friendly, processing us quickly and giving us the lie of the land and locality and reminding us of the races in a few days. The site is generally quiet but there is a background hum from the A61 running in front of it and a fair bit of traffic into the next door supermarkets. The beeping of daily delivery lorries for Lidl was audible but did not happen too often during the day. It’s a short walk into the centre of Thirsk with plenty of cafes and eating places. The market place was impressive showing it is a real working town. We left the van parked and used the train station a mile away for visits out such as the short trip to York. The only disappointment from the site is the tired wash facilities that need some updating. The facilities are quite small and a few people in there feels like they are on top of each other. It’s also difficult to keep the floor free of water as it does spread a fair bit from the showers and sinks when in use. They were kept clean though and it must be difficult for the site staff given the age of the facilities.

Disappointed

Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite
Firstly I must say I have no issues with the wardens, they are doing the best they can with the situation. I booked this site for a 1 night stop on our way home. On our arrival I was informed that as there was a race meeting tomorrow all units had to park on the rally field where there are no electric and no facilties. I was given the option to not stay but felt after a long drive it would be difficult to find a suitable alternative. The rally field was marked out to ensure there was the correct minimum distance between all units and we were directed to a pitch by the warden. When I asked why when I booked we were not advised that we would not be on the normal site he informed me that the information was on the racecourse Web site and club site. I booked on the club website and after the warden informed me that all the information was on the website I checked and found the race day information at the very bottom of the page. I doubt many people would scroll to the very bottom of the page after booking, this information should be available before the booking section. The rally field was clean and tidy however the drinking water taps were not ideal with information prohibiting a hose being connected. The chemical emptying manhole was nowhere near club standard, there was no water tap to use for rinsing, I dread to think of the danger if people used the drinking water taps which are just a few paces away I cannot comment on the actual normal site or it's facilities but the alternative we were obliged to use was at best poor.

Great location

Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite
This site is located conveniently close to the centre of Thirsk. We found it to be a peaceful site. The wardens were fantastic - we arrived on Race Day, so had to go to the rally field first. All of this was so well organised by the wardens - plus we got to see horses thundering by which was a spectacle! There are more drinking water points than some other reviewers found. The loo block is not a CAMC standard loo block, but it is clean and well maintained. Overall - great site

End of season but still busy.

Thirsk Racecourse Club Campsite
We hadn't stayed here before, but we enjoyed the visit. A large area of grass with four long lines of pitches and a handful on the race course rails. We parked up in the middle to avoid potential road noise/Lidl lorries etc., the site is very close to the local supermarkets. Didn't use the facilities but they looked clean, everything was a bit basic but serviceable. We walked through the footpath alongside Tesco via the castle gardens to reach the town and avoid the busy traffic. Thirsk is very popular so lots of visitors everywhere but still a nice old town. We enjoyed the James Herriot museum, the town museum is nearly opposite but is closed on certain days, so we missed a visit there. Plenty to see and do locally for longer stays.
