Why stay here ...

This CL is situated on the Calder and Hebble Navigation, in a picturesque canal wharf known as “Savile Town Wharf” and is within a 10 minute walk from the Market Town of Dewsbury. Savile Town Wharf is steeped in history and tradition; it was built in the nineteenth century, boasting beautiful stone built stable buildings which housed the working horses that pulled the barges along the Calder and Hebble Navigation. The Wharf has undergone extensive sympathetic regeneration with due regards for the heritage of its past in recent years.

Accessed easily, Savile Town Wharf is five minutes drive from junction number 40 on the M1 or ten minutes drive from junction number 25 on the M62. The Wharf is 15 minutes walk from Dewsbury Train Station and 10 minutes walk from Dewsbury Bus Station.

The CL is located on a lawned field with access to water and space for awnings etc available. Chemical toilet disposal, laundry facilities and shared showers and disabled toilets are all available on site.

Children and pets are all welcome. We have 2 outdoor children's play areas and plenty of additional space for picnics or outdoor activity.

On site we have the award winning “Leggers Inn” (winning numerous awards from CAMRA including “Pub of the Year”) which is available for pub grub and traditional “Real Ales” from 11am to 11pm 7 days a week together with the “Old Stables Coffee Shop” serving tradition breakfasts, sandwiches, cakes & coffee etc.

The site is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, these include beautiful towpath walks with stunning scenery or cycle rides along the newly created Calder Valley Greenway.

Dewsbury Market is one of the largest outdoor markets in the UK and was voted “Best Market in the Country” and makes a superb destination for a day out. Coach parties from across The North of England make their way to this market every week. The main market is outdoor but has an indoor area which is housed in a fabulous Victorian Market Hall. The main market days are Wednesday & Saturdays. Friday hosts a second-hand market and there is a “Car Bootless” Sale on Sundays.

There are many superb visitor attractions within half an hours drive of Savile Town Wharf which include Kirklees Light Railway, The Royal Armouries, Eureka Children’s Museum the Yorkshire Mining Museum, Cannon Hall Museum and children farm, and the hugely impressive Dewsbury Minster which can be traced back to AD627 when St Paulinus is said to have visited.

This combination makes Savile Town Wharf the perfect destination for caravan & motorhome owners, boaters, walkers and cyclist alike.

Advance booking is preferred. The CCEP is located in the on site pub and is shared with canal boat visitors.

Laundry on site (a shared facility).

There is free WiFi in the adjacent pub.

There is use of a shower and toilet from 0630 - 2359 but this is a shared facility.

Please email enquiries and to make a booking as phone is not manned throughout the day.

Jubilee Weekend

Savile Town Wharf Marina
We had a lovely break over the Jubilee weekend. This CL is in a good location to visit several places of interest despite its location on the edge of Dewsbury. The site has five hardstandings adjacent to the marina and Leggers PH. Facilities were much better than some CLs we've used and the pub has a playground for children. WIFI just reached our pitch. All around is the influence of the Industrial Revolution and the easy to access canal walks are just a small part of that. More recent industry, business and housing did not affect our weekend but this is not a CL on a farm it has its own vibe.

Don’t try to leave by official exit

Savile Town Wharf Marina
Easy booking with prompt replies. On arrival no indication where to pitch. Entrance through gate onto site needs some attention re potholes. Site shared with canal berths so very open to all. Barmaid told us all would be ok regards pitching and checking in. Pub was welcoming but up 2 flights of stairs if you didn’t want to stay in beer garden. Information board said last meal orders were 8 pm. Not so - they stopped serving 7.30 so don’t know about quality etc of food. Nice location for Dewsbury and surrounding area. Problem started when we tried to leave car park via exit. The caravan bottomed out and we were stuck halfway onto main road. A sign in car park (you have to go through it to enter site) would have been good since apparently this isn’t first time. Make sure you leave via entrance to car park!!!

A surprising haven

Savile Town Wharf Marina
Given that this site is in the midst of an urban area it offers a relative peaceful and charming stay. The owner; Gordon gave us a great welcome and the pub - The Leggers was most welcoming with excellent food and beer. Great value. The site is open with the benefit of the adjacent to the canal arm and moored boats with friendly owners. The site is surprising quiet given its location because the commercial neighbours are generally closed overnight. We would recommend this site to anyone wanting to be in the area for a night or two. We stayed here to visit the Yorkshire Sculpture Park which is about half an hour away by road.

Not for us

Savile Town Wharf Marina
Gordon the owner is lovely, gave us a lovely greeting on arrival and explained where everything is but unfortunately this site is definitely not for us. The write up states it is picturesque marina, but to us it just looks tatty and rather run down and in need of a good tidy up. Quiet - no this site is near an industrial site, there are cars, lorries, trucks and at times it sounds like a racing track especially when the cars speed by with their extremely noisy exhausts and loud thumping music blaring out. The pub on site plays music outside and it is loud and continues late in to the evening. No mention of this in the write up and if we had known we wouldn’t have booked. 10 min walk to town- yep that’s true but it’s through a litter strewn streets and when you get to the town centre it is not exactly a very welcoming place and to be honest if I had been on my own I don’t think I would have felt very safe. Leggers Inn - didn’t even serve garlic bread and the young lady behind the bar didn’t know what a white wine spritzer was and obviously hadn’t made a bitter shandy before!!! Sorry this place may suit some people but to us it was a huge disappointment and not on the list of places that we want to return to.

Great CL

Savile Town Wharf Marina
Great little site with clean facilities. The hard standings were a bonus due to the wet weather. Gordon the owner was very helpful and friendly. The Leggers Inn served great food and was very dog friendly. Hope to be back when next visiting family
